Some of My Favorite Adventure Movie Classics

I couldn’t think of a better way to start off this Blog then to relive my past and the movies that I loved growing up. These were some of the movies that only a Geek could love and still love even today. Although, there are some listed that did appeal to a wider audience at the time and some that kids can still actually find entertaining today.

Goonies

One of the greatest adventure movies of all time and probably the most successful on my list. A story of a group of kids that embark on a treasure hunt in order to save their homes from being taken by rich developers and forcing their families to move out of the town they grew up in. This movie was liked by most and quite amazingly stands the test of time and is liked even by kids today.

Explorers

A story about three friends who create spaceship out of a junkyard carousel car that sends them on an adolescent adventure. The movie had a surprisingly famous cast, a young River Phoenix and Ethan Hawke. I haven’t see this one in a while to know if it actually stands the test of time.

Highlander

The ultimate cult classic. This movie may have been the most successful on the list having even spurred a cult franchise but wasn’t really a movie accepted by the masses. A story about a young man in Scotland that learns that he can’t be killed in a traditional matter and is shunned by his own people. He embarks on a journey where he discovers, with the help of Sean Connery, that he is part of an ancient war where everyone like him is fighting to be the last of their kind on Earth and to obtain an ultimate but unknown power. While the special effects don’t really stand the test of time, they weren’t used much and this movie can still stand on it’s own two feet in my opinion.

The Last Starfighter

I happened to catch this movie on cable the other day. This is a story about young man about to enter adulthood that wants to better himself and be a part of something special but is stymied by his life and realities. He is recruited to become a Starfighter through an arcade game in his trailer park and is whisked away to a distant world that is in a war that only he can win. The special effects in this movie certainly don’t stand the test of time but the story was great and I was still able to enjoy it.

Willow

A story about a reluctant dwarf that must play a critical role in protecting a special baby from an evil queen. The setting of this move is Tolkienesque. The movie was actually directed by Ron Howard and most notably stars Val Kilmer. This was an excellent movie and can still hold it’s own.

The NeverEnding Story

A story about a boy who steals a mysterious book from an antique dealer. The boy begins to read the book and we begin our adventure in another world where something called the Nothing is destroying their world and a young warrior must save the world. The adventure takes an interesting twist when we realize that the life of the boy reading the book and the adventure within the story are starting to become intertwined. A great childhood classic that I will surely share with my kids when they are old enough, because that Nothing was scary.

The Beastmaster

A sword-and-sorcery fantasy about a young man who is seeking revenge for the death of his father. He then learns that he is actually the lost son of a king that is being sought by a cult leader. The hero has the ability to communicate with animals and works with his pets and friends to reclaim his thrown. This was a fun movie with an interesting premise. A bit cheesy but I certainly enjoyed it.

These were some of my favorite movies growing up. I have seen them all countless times and would recommend them to anyone that hasn’t...
